Best Practices
Foliar Mixing & Application Guidelines
Foliar sprays deliver nutrients efficiently and can provide rapid crop response when used in a sound fertility plan.
A Well-Designed Foliar Mix Includes
- Clean water
- Plant nutrients / fertilizers
- Plant biostimulants (seaweed, hormones, enzymes)
- Microbial biostimulants (fulvic & humic substances)
- Microbial inoculants
- Surfactant (add last)
Mixing Sequence (Tank Order)
- Fill tank with clean water
- Pesticides (pre-dilute; add before any bio products)
- Fertilizers / nutrients
- Plant biostimulants
- Microbial biostimulants
- Microbial inoculants (do not mix with pesticides)
- Surfactant (always last)
When in doubt, jar test and add one product at a time.
Timing of Application
- Evening or early morning applications are preferred.
Avoid Spraying
- When leaf surface > 78°F or ambient > 82°F
- During rainfall
- While leaves have heavy dew
pH & EC Targets
- pH 5.2–6.4 for optimal nutrient absorption
- EC < 3800 µS when applying multiple foliars in a season
Water Quality Matters
Ideal foliar water has < 70 ppm total hardness. If hardness is > 150 ppm, mixes can be up to 70% less effective due to carbonate/bicarbonate binding.
Preferred Sources
- Rain water
- Reverse Osmosis (RO) water — often allows 30–50% lower product rates vs. hard water
- Tested clean water
Avoid / Use With Caution
- Softened water (high Na/Cl; can skew sap tests)
- Most filtered water (still may contain carbonates/bicarbonates)
- City water (chlorine/chloramine antimicrobial)
