A big corn crop leaves several tons of high carbon residue on the surface. Left alone it locks up nitrogen and shelters disease into spring. Digested, it becomes the nutrient release your next crop is already counting on.

The reason
Carbon to nitrogen is the whole story.
Soil microbes need roughly one part nitrogen for every twenty four parts carbon to break something down. Above that line, they have to pull nitrogen from the soil to do the work.
Corn stover sits far above that line. When it lands on cold ground in October, the biology capable of digesting it is either short on nitrogen, short on the right organisms, or both. So the stalk sits there, intact, into planting season.
That is nitrogen immobilization, and it happens in the exact six inches your next crop is trying to emerge through.

How these estimates are calculated
Corn biomass: Yield × 42.2 lb of residue per bushel ÷ 2,000. Based on a 0.53 Harvest Index; actual dry stover varies with hybrid genetics, seasonal stress and combine header height.
Nutrients: Dry residue tons × crop-specific average nutrient concentration. Phosphorus and potassium are shown in fertilizer units (P₂O₅ and K₂O).

What the program does
Give the biology what the stalk is missing.
A residue program supplies the organisms that specialize in breaking down lignin and cellulose, plus a small amount of nitrogen and carbon so they do not have to rob the soil to get started.

Faster breakdown
Visible loss of stalk integrity over winter instead of whole stalks in April.

Potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen held in residue become available to the next crop.

Warmer, cleaner seedbed
Less mat on the surface means faster spring soil warming and better closure at planting.

Residue is where several corn pathogens overwinter. Digesting it removes the hotel.
Timing
Two windows. Fall is better.
Fall, behind the combine
Apply while soil temperatures are still above freezing so biology has time to work before spring planting. The earlier the pass, the more weeks of activity you buy.

Spring, as a standalone pass
Apply before planting when residue is thick and field conditions allow. Keep the biological application separate from chemical passes, then expect breakdown to continue into early summer.
